Thai, Cambodian Forces Engage in Clashes
The Thai military dispatched an F-16 fighter jet to confront Cambodian troops as mounting tensions over the border dispute culminated in violent encounters, resulting in at least two civilian fatalities, a news outlet reported, referencing the Thai Royal Army.
Among the six F-16 fighter jets that Thailand prepared for deployment near the disputed border, one aircraft launched an attack on Cambodian territory, successfully destroying a military objective.
“We have used air power against military targets as planned,” stated Thai army deputy spokesperson Richa Suksuwanon in a press briefing.
The army later confirmed that all deployed F-16 jets safely returned to their base.
In response, Cambodian forces launched a counterattack against Thai troops early on Thursday, according to a newspaper, which cited the nation’s Defense Ministry.
“Cambodia has always stood by its principle of resolving disputes through peaceful means,” remarked Prime Minister Hun Manet.
“But in this situation, we have no choice but to respond with military force against the armed aggression.”
